ABC Coalition

Arts are Basic Coalition (ABC)
In summer 2000, the Maine Arts Commission and the Maine Alliance for Arts Education convened a large group of arts education organizations and supporters to investigate ways in which we can collaborate for the cause of “arts every day for every child.” Out of this meeting grew a new coalition, called ABC (Arts are Basic Coalition). Our mission is “to advocate with a common strong voice for the visual and performing arts for all students in Maine.”

Position Statement

The arts are basic to a child’s education.

National statistics show that students who participate in the arts

• improve their learning in academic subjects,

• understand diverse cultures,

• learn group cooperation skills,

• have fewer disciplinary problems and higher school attendance rates,

• increase their scores on standardized tests, and

• develop such life skills as creative thinking and productive inter-personal communications.

Every student in Maine should have the opportunity to actively learn in and through all the arts—visual, music, dance, theater and writing—at least on a weekly basis in every grade K-12.

Our mission is to advocate, with a strong voice, for every student in Maine to have the opportunity to actively learn in and through all the arts—visual, music, dance, theater and writing—at least on a weekly basis in every grade K-12. Please join us in advocating for Maine’s students!
